Welcome to HCM,
I am sorry to hear that you developed a post-operative infection that has spread thus necessitating the possible removal of your
uterus. This is terrible! Do you know what type of infection? Was it methicillin resistant
staphylococcus aureus or MRSA?
I believe that much of your pain is from the infection with possible gas formation inside the wound depending on the type of bacteria you are infected with.
The
nausea from the infection and possibly from any antibiotics you are on is normal, but that doesn't solve the problem. Can you drink ginger root tea and do you have anyone or anywhere to get it? The ginger is not harmful to your situation and should help a great deal with the nausea and
stomach upset.
You need to keep your protein intake as high as you can while following a diet easy to digest. Easily digested foods include chicken soup, popsicles (helps with hydration), jellos, alkaline juices (papaya, mango but not orange or acidic juices if they irritate your stomach which in many cases they do). Protein may need to be supplemented with canned high nitrogen, high calorie drinks pre-packaged.
I do not recommend drinking a lot of milk with lactose, it may upset the stomach more causing gas, nausea and
vomiting. You may be able to tolerate puddings, custards. . .Lactose can be broken down by putting
lactaid pills in the milk to break down that gassy milk sugar.
If you can keep children's chewable multi-
vitamins down, try chewing 1 per day if drinking liquid supplements that have protein and nutrients in it or chew 2 if you are not able to keep the protein drinks down.
Oatmeal or other soft cereals may be tolerated. You may want to mix some protein powder in with it if you aren't meeting protein goals.
Since you are healing,I advise a little more protein - around 1.5 g/kg per day and you will want to maintain this post-operatively if they need to do another surgery.
Good luck with everything! Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
Stay away from fiber right now until your stomach straightens out.
