Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been takin Hytrin (terazosin) 10 mg nightly for over 2 years and it has become increasingly ineffective; however a 20 mg. dose over the past week has shown great improvement without any side effect. Is this a wise move, knowing that eventually even this dose may not be effective and other intervention may be necessary.
Hi, thanks for your question,I have read it and understand your concern.
Answer: Increasing the dose of terazosin from 10mg to 20mg overnight is not a good practice. There could be significant side effects associated with such a move. And 20mg is the maximum allowed dose that a doctor can prescribe to a patient.
One of the side effects of this medication is that it can lower BP to below normal range (especially when you change your position from sitting or lying to standing and there is a risk that you may fall over.
If you are taking terazosin for high blood pressure or enlarged prostate and is not effective, you should see your doctor who might gradually increase the dose or add another medication that might help with your symptoms.
Hope this answer was helpful. And feel free to ask me if the issue is not clear.
