Suggest Dosage For Motrin

My granddaugther is 12 & started her period 3 days ago and has been taking 100 mg Motrin one dose at night then one dose in the morning because she says the cramps come back in the morning then again at night. She seems to have a heavy flow during the night and could that be due to taking too much Motrin. She has been doing this for 3 days.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Motrin contains ibuprofen, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
Motrin is used to reduce fever and treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as headache, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps or minor injury.
What dose she is taking seems to be fine.
NSAIDs inhibit platelet aggregation and have been shown to prolong bleeding time in some individuals. Hence, during menstruation, flow can be more than normal and may also prolong for a longer duration with use of this medication.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
