Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter just have spinal fusion surgery. We want to ween her off morphine before we leave hospital. She ll have oxycodone prescribed for home but we can only take every 4 hours. At the hospital we currently go every 2 hours using morphine and oxycodone. What can I ask for or use at home in place of morphine?
Hopefully she is at least 18; use of narcotics in younger people carries a very high risk of addiction, and not taking them after spinal fusion surgery is a big problem too. Individual reaction to narcotics varies. Generally oxycodone would last more than 2 hrs. If a minimal dose is used (2.5 or 5 mg) then only the very highest peak of the drug is being noticed and slight increases in the dose of the oxycodone (7.5 mg) will increase its duration to probably 4 hrs.
Positioning the neck with a brace, warmth, aspirin like drugs, another day in the hospital on the IV drugs until the worst of the surgical pain subsides. OR home IV drugs with a lock box for ONE WEEK. But, after the peak of the pain, a low-ish dose of oxycodone (5 to 7.5) up to a total of 30 mg a day is pretty safe and a pretty low risk of addiction UNLESS the person is 18 or younger, in which case there are not great options.
