Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I AM A PHARMACIST AT A HOSPITAL, WE GET ORDERS FOR VENOFER IV 500 MG EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. I HAVE DONE THE RESEARCH AND ALL I CAN FIND IS THAT THERE IS LIMITED EXPERIENCE ON DOSE OF 500 MG. WE USUALLY SEE 100 TO 400 MG MAX MOST OF THE TIME. ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS
Iron sucrose (venofer) delivers 200 mg of iron per injection. Parenteral iron is used in two ways. One is to administer the total dose of iron required to correct the hemoglobin deficit and provide the patient with at least 500 mg of iron stores; the second is to give repeated small doses of parenteral iron over a pro tracted period. The latter approach is common in dialysis centres , where it is not unusual for 100 mg of elemental iron to be given weekly for 10 weeks to augment the response to recombinant EPO therapy.
