Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
The Dr. Office told me that my total cholesterol was 740. They put me on a fairly low dose of prilosec 20 mg. A day. Isnt 740 really extreme? How concerned should I be and is 20 mg. Of prilosec a day enough to handle the problem. Thank you for any answers and or suggestions on this matter. Sincerely, Brian
Hi Brian, your history is a little confusing. 740 is extremely high for total cholesterol (I don't remember ever seeing one that high), but Prilosec is used to treat stomach problems, not cholesterol. Double check with your doctor if the 740 was actually the cholesterol measurement or something else. Triglycerides are tested at the same time as cholesterol, and I have seen them that high and higher. Perhaps they were referring to triglycerides. And ask him/her if it truly was Prilosec they gave you. Generally drugs called statins are used for cholesterol, but perhaps one of the brand name drugs had a similar name to Prilosec and they got it wrong. Be sure you are receiving the appropriate treatment for the right condition. Hope this helps.
