I am 55 years old and just found out last year that I have epilepcy and have started last yr having seizures. What are my chances that this will continue to only get worse with age? Is there more than my medication that I can do to help me besides having surgery? It is Focal Seizures.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. You are 55 years old and have focal seizures. For focal seizures it is advisable to get MRI done. MRI can help to rule out any brain lesion or mass that can cause seizures. Once MRI comes normal then there is no need to worry. Anti epileptic drugs can help to control most of the seizures. Drugs like Sodium Valproate, Carbamazepine, Phenytoin etc are used commonly. These drugs help to reduce the episodes of seizures. As per guidelines the medicines should be continued for at least 3 years post remission of seizures. If you will take medicines regularly and will have good compliance then the risk of relapse would be almost nil. With proper medicines the need for surgery will be minimal. The seizures will not get worse with age.
