Suggest Medication For Hypertension Other Than Bisoprolol
my wife was recently put on high blood pressure meds for her moderately high blood presume (155/90 avg). They prescribed 2.5mg bisoprolol fumarate and 6.25mg of irbesartan/HCTZ daily. This has lowered her blood pressure, BUT the side effects of this makes her question what other alternatives she has. The major negative side effect is fatigue and loss of energy. Thanks.
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
JNC 8 (Eighth Joint National Committee- 2014)guidelines on Hypertension recommends to initiate drug treatment with an ACEI, ARB, CCB or thiazide-type diuretic in the non-black hypertensive population, including those with diabetes -moderate evidence to support . The panel did not recommend β-blockers for the initial treatment of hypertension because in one study use of β-blockers resulted in a higher rate of the primary composite outcome of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke compared to use of an ARB, a finding that was driven largely by an increase in stroke . β-blockers (bisoprolol in your case)are losing their preeminent place as first line antihypertensive you can stop bisoprolol and replace with one CCB(Calcium channel blocker) eg tablet Amlodipine 2.5 mg daily to start with. you can continue with irbesartan/HCTZ in addition as before.Doses of anti-hypertensive drugs need to be titrated under supervision of your doctor.
