Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am trying to find a drug for my father who has bad incontinence issues. His urologist prescribed Imipramine HCL Tofranil 25 mg. His primary care physicians at my father s check up warned him against the medication. The primary doctor told him that it causes confusion and can cause falls. My father will be 88 years old this year. So I am concerned this drug can cause confusion which he does not need. I am wondering if there is an alternative drug out there that can solve the incontinence problem without the confusion and other bad side effects?
Hi, Tofranil is imipramine HCL is anticyclic anti-depressant and is usually avoided due to its side effects. Urinary incontinence is common in the elderly and now a days, the first line of treatment starts with antimuscuranic agents like tolterodine ER or oxybutinin. You can get a prescription from you doctor for this. If you father is one any medication, do look out for side effects especially in relation to CNS group medications. Other life style changes can also be tried include 1. Bladder retraining 2. Prompted voiding 3. Habit training
Hopefully i have answered your query. If you have any further queries, happy to help again.
