Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m 26 and have had a cold for a week with moderate phlegm present. My voice is now hoarse and I m also a singer with a performance in four days. I m doing the warm walter salt garggling, tea with honey and ginger, and only speaking with absolutely necessary. Someone suggested I use a nebulizer to help the process. My stepmom sent me hers, but I need to get the medication for it. What type would you recommend ?
Hoarseness of voice is due to inflammation of the vocal cords which occurs in laryngitis. Most often the reason is a viral infection. Voice rest is the best treatment. Honey and ginger may have some symptomatic relief for the cold. Gargling is of no use unless there is a sore throat. Nebulisation is the treatment for asthma and the medicine used dilates the bronchial tree ( the air passages) which become constricted in asthma. It has no effect in laryngitis and will only lead to side effects like palpitation and trembling. If you are not better or your sputum is very yellow or green it would be better for you to see an ENT specialist or an internist and take an appropriate antibiotic after the necessary tests. Hope you get well and would be able to render a good performance. Dr. Noble Zachariah
