i am asking this to help a friend. she had a miscarriage in march, found out she was pregnant from a blood test again a month later. she is thought to be 8-9 weeks now and seemed to be having a normal healthy pregnancy. she went for an ultrasound and was sent to the hospital for a follow up and was told that she had an empty sac. she is scheduled for a d&c monday. is there a possiblity that this is a false diagnoses? her hcg levels are rising normal and she is growing like pregnant
Your friend's diagnosis of normal pregnancy was a clinical diagnosis in which we cannot visualise the baby. By ultrasonography, actual products of conception are visualised in which it is evident that the sac of products of conception is without baby (embryo) in it. Such pregnancy is called as Blighted ovum. Such pregnancy does not grow. If such pregnancy does not get aborted by itself, it needs termination. Blighted ovum can be diagnosed easily by ultrasonography only. please do not doubt the diagnosis and advise your friend to submit herself for termination of pregnancy. at the most she may discuss with her Obstrtrician the method for termination.
I hope with this much information, you can counsel your friend. If any further help is required, I may be contacted on nishikants@gmail.com
