Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is 4 year old Last month she had some symptoms of amebiasis. She has taken antibiotics also. Now her stool get improved but once she stopped the medicine again she shows some mucus in her stool. I heard that amebiasis will take time to cure completely. Is it correct . need to consult with a gastroenterologist
I appreciate your concern for the stool analysis showing mucus despite of taking full course of treatment.
Amebiasis is caused by parasite called as entambea histolytica.
The medicine Flagyl (meotronidazole) is effective in killing only the trophozoites of E histolytica hence the parasites are not eradicated because the cyst forms of E histolytica are resistant to Flagyl hence not killed.
There is no need to repeat the dose of Flagyl again.
To kill the cysts of E histolytica, another antibiotic Diloxanide furoate or Iodoquinol should be taken three times daily for 10 days this will ensure the total eradication of the infection.
your treating physician or gastro-enterologist will know about it.
Hope this will help you.
