Hi, I am a 4th grade teacher. I have a student who is diagnosed ADHD. She chews pencils to get to the graphite. This week I caught her ingesting hand sanitizer. I reported it to the nurse and Principal. I removed the hand sanitizer. The other children report she has been ingesting hand sanitizer since 3rd grade. I know it has a high alcohol content. I am concerned for this student. What more should I do?
Hi, Thanks for asking. In my opinion the child should be given an oro motor program for oral desensitization. The children with ADHD are very impulsive. You may use a positive re enforcement method with her where you catch her being good. It would be better to remove the hand sanitizer from her reach for now.
