Elderly 83 year old with a wound on navel, has been blistering up and bursting, foul smelling. She is cleaning it daily and trying to keep it dry and no clothes rubbing on it. It has been around for almost a year now, local dr saying hydrocortisone cream but this is not helping. Thanks
I can understand your concern for or blistering wound on navel. After understanding your query I can make out the best probable diagnosis of "Belly button infection". Any kind of blistering up and bursting, foul smelling discharge from this area is a sign of an infection. As this area is has high chances of fungal and bacterial proliferation.
In my patients I suggest the following suggestions:
- Let her not pick or scratch the belly button
- Let her wash the area with simple soap or cleansers.
- Let her clean the area with warm saline water and dry it completely with sterilized gauze multiple time of the day.
- Apply antibacterial cream such as gentamycin or gentain violet paint over the area in a very thin layer.
All the best.
