Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I'm going crazy with acute diverticulitis .....3rd attack in 3 years. I have started with Cipro, not effective, took flagyl twice today and sick as a dog with cramps and diarrhea. I just can't take another pill while I'm on liquid diet, but I do have some clarithromycin, should I take that, will it be gentler thAn flagyl while my stomach is empty?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Recurrent attacks of diverticulitis that is thrice in three years can really be troublesome. I would advise you the following as per the history you have provided. Clarithromycin is not the drug of choice for diverticulitis. If Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole are not much effective other medications like Amoxy-clav or Cefixime can be very useful Your Doctor can help you the best in choice and prescription of antibiotic. Repeat colonoscopy, biopsy and Contrast Enhanced CT scan of the abdomen can help simplifying the diagnosis and getting you the best possible management. IN some cases surgical excision of the diverticuli or the colon bearing diverticulitis can help for the permanent cure. Diet changes as per the advise of a Nutritionist can help you further. Take plenty of oral fluids and electrolyte solution to avoid dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
