Suggest Remedy For Fatigue, Off Balance And Confusion After Taking Trimethoprim

I took Trimethoprim for a urine infection after Nitrofurantoin didn t help. Due to the lack of support from my surgery the infection went on for 7 weeks, with many urine samples being sent here and there. The Trimethoprim caused me itchyness which is a known side affect and also made me very tired almost dopey during the 7 days I took it. Since taking it I have had a numbness in my head which I find very difficult to explain to my doctor, this also makes me feel slightly off-balance when walking. The best way I can describe it is a numb, pressure feeling in my head, putting me in a hazy, dream-like state most of the time, and making me feel I m not getting enough oxygen to my brain and my IQ has been cut in half. During this period I have also experienced pains in my neck and right arm and wonder if the pulling sensation on the back of my neck could be the actual cause of these symptoms and the Trimethoprim just happens to have been consumed at the same time. Concerned, Graham.

Hi,
Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
- Trimethoprim is not known to cause confusion, loss of balance as a side effect. The fatigue can be after allergic reaction / or the infection itself.
Actually if you have itchiness after the drug... you should discontinue it ( for fear of severe allergic reaction ) & replace the medicine with other suitable antibiotic ( sensitivity being checked by culture & sensitivity test of urine )
Please check with your treating doctor.
- In this scenario your symptoms seem to be due to-
- severe urinary infection only( which needs detailed kidney function tests/ culture of urine )followed by specific management under an expert urologist's care.
- Alternatively your neck / right arm / back can be the cause -- needs to be investigated for heart or cervical spinal involvement.
- Being a problem with multiple causative possibilities- an over all health check up with necessary investigations would pin point out the basic pathology followed by expert advise regarding management.
Till then, Take rest ( avoid psychological or physical exertion )/ Have light , nourishing diet, take plenty of water.Consult treating doctor earliest for further assessment & specific management.
Thanks.
