HI Doc - I am a 45 year old female. I have been taking Eltroxin 100 for past 2 years. Stopped taking it for the last 6 months. My hair has thinned out badly, chest pains, weight gain (poor eating habits?),blurred vision, etc. My recent test indicated that my thyroid was functioning normally but my doctor asked me to continue with Eltroxin. What are the effects of taking Eltroxin on a normal thyroid functioning? Thanks Sharon
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM! I have gone carefully through your concern.
If the last hormonal level has been within the normal ranges without taking levothyroxine at least for 6 weeks than you do not have under active thyroid. The symptoms you have now are not due to the low thyroid hormones and there is no reason why you should take levothyroxine. Taking it when the thyroid function is normal will lead to over active thyroid which have many side effects.
The most dangerous side effects of over active thyroid are high heart rate and osteoporosis. It is contraindicated to take levothyroxine with normal hormonal level.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
