Hi there and thanks for sharing your question with us on HCM.

I am sorry to tell you that there is nothing over the counter that is going to effectively relieve this symptoms. You could try taking vitamin E and evening primrose oil but there is little evidence to suggest that these alone will help you feel better. Your symptoms of weight gain, hot flashes, extreme sweats, fluctuating body temperature, low libido and possibly mood swings all suggest hormonal dysfunction.

In women, the loss of the hormone progesterone especially can result in these symptoms. There is also a possibility that your thyroid hormone may also be low. You have not mentioned your age or gender but I hypothesize that you are a lady possibly in your mid to late 40's and may be approaching menopause. During menopause, estradiol (the other female hormone) levels can escalate resulting in hot flashes, extreme sweating and bloating. This hormone escalates because there is too little or no progesterone to keep it in balance. In general, overweight ladies do not produce sufficient progesterone.

What you could immediately do for yourself is clean up your diet - eat clean, cut back on carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, flour, pastries etc) processed foods (canned and preserved meat, sausages, burger patties etc) and snacks. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits, fresh nuts, lean white meat, oily fish, eggs and low fat dairy. Take in healthy grains like oats and bran. Supplement generously with high dose omega 3s to boost your hormone level. Learn about hormone friendly diets on the internet and use these as your guide.

If you do not have an exercise regime, gently ease into one. Start with 10 -15 minute workouts to help boost your basal metabolic rate. Exercising regularly will at least help you sleep a little better at night. If you are already on a regime, reconsider if you have fallen into a rut or a comfort zone. Consider varying your workout and add in weights and resistance training.

If you do indulge in smoking or consuming alcohol moderately, you need to cut back.

Go to your regular doctor and have a blood work up done looking for dyslipidemia (cholesterol), blood sugar and if possible hormonal levels. Do NOT go on synthetic hormone replacement (Provera, Premarin etc) - these will cause more complications in the long run. They increase your risk of cancer and heart disease. If possible, consider bio identical hormone replacement. There is a lot evidence that these can help you sail through this difficult transition in your life, aid you in weight loss and protect you from heart disease, brittle bones, mood disorders and cancer.

Going on a natural progesterone replacement will significantly reduce the severity of your symptoms. Medical literature supports this.

Different countries have different regulations regarding bio identicals though but if it is available to you, do give this option good thought.

Take care and thank you.
