Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Remedy For Hypertension After An Interferon Treatment
My husband finished an interferon treatment in May for Stage III melanoma. He is now having chronic high blood pressure symptoms, even though he is currently on high blood pressure medication. Could there be a possible complication with his adrenal gland as a side effect of the interferon treatment, and if so, will it become permanent?
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic. I can understand your concern. Yes, hypertension is common side effect of interferon treatment. Actually interferon injection acts directly on adrenal glands and damage it permanently. So hypertension caused by interferon treatment is mostly permanent in nature. So he may need higher dose of antihypertensive drug or addition of new antihypertensive drugs to achieve control in high blood pressure. Along with drugs, strict salt restriction in diet and exercise are also needed to control blood pressure. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks.
