Suggest Remedy For Itchy Rashes On Penis And Scrotum

For the past couple months I have been itching on the underside of my penis and on my scrotum. There is no rash, but the skin is pink or irritated looking (I assume from scratching it). I went to a general doctor today. She thought it was yeast infection and prescribed Miconazole nitrate 2% cream. She called the prescription in and when I showed up to pick it up the gal that worked there said it was an over the counter drug and had a box of some kind of vaginal cream with an applicator. She asked if I was sure this is what I needed and I told her I had no idea. Does this sound like something I would use on the genitals and is it safe to use? Does what I described sound like a yeast infection to you? I am not currently sexually active so I don t know where I would have picked up a yeast infection... The pharmacist had an accent and I couldn t understand what he was trying to tell me.

Hello,

Maintain your hygiene. Take bath regularly. Use antibacterial soap. Wash and clean your private area thoroughly. Change your undies and clothes you wear regularly. Wash it in hot water with a little Savlon, let it dry in the sun. You should wash the towel you use daily. Do not wear undies in which you have sweated. Your symptoms are indicative of Jock itch (tinea cruris), it is a form of ringworm that can affect the private organ due to poor hygiene.

Keep your private are clean and dry, you should take a bath and change your clothes each time you sweat to prevent spread. You can apply ointment/cream clotrimazole on the area affected. Take antihistamine at bedtime to reduce itching and control spread. To be on the safer side take a course of Itraconazole orally.

It is contagious and spreads from one person to another and from one area of your body to another. It often spreads through shared personal towels, clothes, toiletries, equipment's, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
