Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, Two nights ago I had a panic attack. Probably the worst attack I have ever had. I ve had panic attacks in the past, but this was the first time where I felt a tingling sensation throughout my body and face. It felt the same as when your leg or arm falls asleep. Since that night, I have noticed a random burning rubber smell. Not all of the time, just once in a while. Should I be concerned or shrug it off? I am 23 years old, 6 2 , and 150lbs.
thanks for your query, In my opinion, if you had panic attacks in past and the last two episodes are also the same except that they were in the night and that these episodes were associated with tingling sensation and there were no other symptoms , then you need not to do anything special. wait for some time, practice slow, deep breathing, if it does not get better, consult a physician
I understand that you must be worried about the recent panic attack and the ensuing problems that you have experienced. Having burning or tingling sensations over the face and extremities is a commonly seen during panic attacks. This happens dur to hyperventillation, which in turn results in hypocalcemia. This is nothing to worry and the remedy for thos is to practice controlled breathing and relaxation techniques to avoid hyperventilating.
However, the other symptom that you have mentioned, namely, the intermittent smell of burning rubber is concerning. This can sometimes be a symptom of temporal lobe epilepsy. So, I would suggest that you see a doctor for an evaluation, in order to rule out this possibility.
Best wishes, Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar MRCPsych.(U.K.)
