Suggest Remedy For Nausea Due To Intake Of Antibiotics
My friend s mother had a double bypass surgery 7 weeks ago. She is back in the hospitalmdue to a sternum bone infection. They have her on heavy duty antibiotics which will continue for 6 to 8 weeks. She has had a terrible time with nausea. I told him to ask if she was getting probiorics a few times a day. He asked and they told him, No, we don t do that. So he doesn t want to hear anything else from me about it because I m not a doctor and the doctors say it isnt necessary. I don t agree. Do you think she shouldget probiotics?
There is no clear evidence that probiotics are helpful in this situation. The nausea may be caused by the antibiotics, but that is nothing that the probiotics can fix. Probiotics are thought to keep the balance of bacteria in the colon at a more normal level where long term antibiotics might cause changes in the balance. Probiotics might prevent diarrhea or superinfections in the colon from bad bacteria remaining after antibiotics reduce the good bacteria. However, studies about this have not been conclusive. The nausea can be treated with antinausea meds, but it is a direct effect of antibiotics on the stomach and not related to changes in the bacteria, so probiotics won't help.
