Hi, for 5 days now I have been experiencing a phantom cigarette smoke smell. NO ONE SMOKES including me. I also have pain in the back of my head and at the base of my brain stem area that at times shoots to the front. I feel off ...I m talking slower, moving slower, Forgetting things .. I have Lupus and some other autoimmune diseases so I have issues daily. BUT, this is different. It feels like nothing I ve ever experienced since becoming ill. Also, I have NEVER smelled a phantom smell before. Yuck... THANK YOU!❤️ :) Jeannette
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have phantosmia which is constant smell of smoke in nose which is due to disturbance in olfactory sensations usually known as olfactory hallucination. It also sometimes occur due to smoking habit , olfactory nerve dysfunction , allergic reaction and infection of sinus also known as sinusitis. Need not to worry. For now take steam , do saline nasal rinses and avoid food like nuts and seafood. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor will take history or may order CT scan , blood test and nasal endoscopy . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin or penicillin along with decongestants and anti inflammatory. Doctor may also refer you to allergy specialist if he /she find this problem to be due to allergic reaction.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
