Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am having a voice problem beginning less than a year ago. I am 83, but my voice has been good until recently, becoming very raspy and without power . I have seen a ENT specialist, had an x-ray, and did a barium swallow. Nothing visible is the answer. Are there exercises that I could do? Your suggestions, please!Nance
Hi Nance, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. Raspy and powerless voice could be due to vocal cord inflammation. 2. As an ENT opinion is completed, I do not expect you to have any polyp or tumor. 3. We need to evaluate for hypothyroidism and reflux esophagitis. Acid reflux affecting the cords is known to occur commonly. Voice rest along with proton pump inhibitors like esmoprazole and domperidone for 3-4 weeks, should improve symptoms. Avoid, talking much. Talk normally and never in high pitched or hushed tones. 4. Also a thyroid hormone profile test is necessary to rule out any hypothyroidism. Meet your doctor for tests and prescription. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
