Suggest Remedy For Severe Hip Pain In An Elderly Person

I am 76. in quite good health. However when I walk or do activities around the house my left hip gets a strong pain which makes me stop walking for several second & then I can walk until the pain starts again. If I sit for a short while the pain goes away & sometimes it mostly stays away until I finish walk. It always comes back as soon as I do something else. Ibuprofen helps a lot.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Experiencing severe hip pain at the age of 76 years could be due to two reasons:
1. Osteoarthritis of the hip.
2. Avascular necrosis.
Avascular necrosis pain doesn't subside and it increases every time you get it. The pain is so severe that it may not subside with usual analgesic medication.
Since you are getting relief from taking Ibuprofen, the pain looks more like osteoarthritis. This occurs due to wear and tear of cartilages in the hip joint.
To minimize the pain and live better, you can adopt the following things:
1. It would be better to take Paracetamol or Ibuprofen with Paracetamol combination in case of pain. Kindly take these analgesics when the pain is severe and unbearable.
2. Take Glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, N-acetyl glucosamine containing medications, which would help you to recover damage to cartilage and keep it healthy. Kindly monitor your blood glucose frequently and you may avoid taking this medication if your are diabetic and not under good control.
3. Physiotherapy exercises would help in keeping the joint healthy and to overcome pain.
It is always better to take rest and proceed for walk whenever you experience pain.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
