Suggest Remedy For Side Effects Due To Intake Of Fosamax And Prolia Injections

I am a 55 year old female..I am 16years post menopausal....I recently had a Dexa scan done and was told that the score was -2.5 (five years ago it was -2.4). I was advised to take Fosamax ...after reading about the side effects..I became concerned because I have already lost two back molars due to bone loss...I called the Doctors office to discuss the concern...and they advised Prolia injections....but after reading the side effects from that...I have the same concern. I excercise every day (jogging on treadmill 40 min)..and I take 1200 SR calcium..daily...when I had the -2.4 score I ran outside 5 miles everyday....My grandmother had osteoporosis and passed at 100...and my mother has it..she is 78 and has had a hip hairline fracture.....I also read that Prolia can lower your blood calcium...I have never had a baseline test done to know what my blood calcium is..and one hasn t been ordered.. Just looking for some medical advise....

Hi,

Fosamax tablet is composed of 'Alendronate', which belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.

It is the drug used for the treatment of osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, and several other bone diseases. It prevents certain types of bone loss in adults. It helps to maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of fractures.

Side effects associated with intake of Fosamax include stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea. Prolia is composed of 'Denosumab', which is a human monoclonal antibody for the treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women.

Side effects of Prolia include hypocalcemia, infections, osteonecrosis of the jaw and dermatological adverse effects. Normal calcium levels should be maintained between 9 to 11 mg/dl. Since you have been supplemented with calcium, it is unlikely that you may encounter low calcium levels (hypocalcemia). Symptoms of hypocalcemia is evident when serum levels drop below 7 mg/dl.

Kindly take the medications as prescribed by your doctor and do the necessary follow-up as advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
