Suggest Remedy For Soreness In Throat

Hi, I sneezed last Thursday and held it in, and feel like I may have breathed in or hiccuped at the same time, as I got a really sharp pain when I sneezed. Since then it s felt like I have a lump in my throat, but not at the front- a bit behind- and it hurts to swallow, or sneeze, and occasionally hurts to talk as well. I was just wondering what it may be?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi. It seems to me that you may have created some injury to your throat and Interarytenoid region (posterior part of your voice box) when you held your sneeze in and that may have caused some localised swelling giving the sensation of a lump. The pressure contained may have caused some soft tissue injury leading to all of your symptoms.

Injury to your throat will present in the same manner as something stuck in the throat or the feeling of a lump in the throat. The body cannot differentiate between an actual lump or an injury. There may have been some injury to the vocal cords as well leading to pain while talkng.

The best way to trat this is by giving your throat some rest and limiting its movement as much as possible. Good voice rest for 24-48 hours should hopefully get you back to normal soon. If your pain worsens, voice changes or you develop fever then do see an ENT specialist for a detailed evaluation.

Hope this information was helpful. Do let me know if you have any further questions.
