Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am married to a woman whom I believe is bipolar. She has wild mood swings that come out of nowhere. They can become threatening, and no matter what I say to try to make it better, it can take 3-4 hours to get her to calm down. And sometimes it can turn into a week of crazy, irrational thoughts and threatening. What can I do? I need a support group. Thanks
hi.. you feel it as bipolar...but mood swings and irrational thoughts could be part of another psychiatric illness. you have not given the age of your wife...if it is below 30 years and mood swings are prominent and it has continued from the adolescence...then you should undergo for proper psychiatric evaluation because it could be part of borderline personality...so go for it... there are many better options for treatment of bipolar disorder, she can be given mood stabilizers and antipsychotics but each and every medication has its benefits and side effects, medications can be changed with patient profile..
so, i will suggest that whatever illness she has u must undergo a psychiatric evaluation and shud go for proper treatment, but i would say that severe illness in psychiatry is definitely going to take much time for improvement. you shud hurry, my friend... i hope u ll find this advice helpful...best luck..
You need to first confirm the diagnosis of bipolar disorder by visiting a psychiatrist. If the diagnosis is confirmed to be bipolar disorder then also a lot of treatment options are available and that can be extremely helpful to both you and your wife.
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.
I understand that you must be going through a stressful time due to your wife's problems. Such kind of drastic mood swings can be seen in Bipolar disorder as well as Personality disorders. A detailed history and psychological assessment is necessary to make the correct diagnosis.
So, the first thing that I would advise you to do is to take her to a good psychiatrist for a proper evaluation. Once the correct diagnosis is made, then further treatment can be started. There are effective treatment options available - in the form of mood stabilizer medication as well as psychological therapies which can help control her mood swings.
You can also contact your local social services team to find a support group for carers of persons with psychiatric problems. Try to involve other family members also in her treatment and care so that your burden is reduced.
Wish you all the best.
Regards, Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar MBBS., DPM., MRCPsych.(U.K.) Consultant Psychiatrist
In my opinion, you first need to convince your wife to consult a psychiatrist to confirm the diagnosis. If she has bipolar disorder then there are good treatment options available.
