Hi this is Ramanathan. I am diabetic for the past seven years and am on tablets to control diabetics. During the last 3 months my sugar level is not coming down - of course during this period, I have been traveling continuously.Since about a week I am having severe pain in the right ear - sort of pricking pain. I went to a GP initially and he gave me some pain killers. The pain became too much & so I went to an ENT specialist. She told me that this situation was due to my sugar level being high - it was 324 on that day. She gave me an anti biotic and a pain killer and an ear drop and asked me to get my sugar under control. I have since reduced the sugar level to 227 this morning. But the pain still continues. Please suggest something as I have to travel again in two days time. Incidentally, as the pain was unbearable last night, I got some hot dry fomentation which gave me a lot of relief.
in my opinion according to your history this likely is malignant otitis external. it's usually present in diabetics. sugar control is necessary, you must get your sugar level checked up routinely. for pain you can take painkillers according to your nephrological status, as diabetes and painkillers both affect kidney. ear infection is quite resistant in diabetics. try different topical antibiotics if possible after culture and sensitivity of ear swab. you must visit ENT specialist nearby for that. and actual status of ear needs to be seen.
