I would like to know what alerts have been given regarding the side effects of Lansoprazole. I had been taking it since 1997 -due to the effect of Prednisalone on my stomach and lining of my Oesophagus- then I was tole to stop taking it because of an alert. I have recently had to start taking it again. Heen. ad bas there been a recent alert? I thought there had been. Thank You. Shirley MaINSTONE

Lansoprazole is recommended for a number of acidity related problems in the stomach and food pipe. In its short term course of therapy it is found to have minimal side effects however on prolonged use the common side effects include thinning of the bones, deficiency of vitamin B12 and a high risk to have gut infections. Effects on the bone depend upon the age of the patient also. In postmenopausal age the risk of thinning of the bones is high so one must get the bone mineral density to rule out this problem and take treatment if found.
