Suggest Tests To Rule Out Intestinal Parasitic Infections
Hello, My husband is seeing the gastroentologist tomorrow. He had an ultrasound and blood tests that showed gall stones. Stool sample was taken and doctor checked for giardia and three other parasites. We suspect liver flukes. He has been to Japan about four times in last five years as well as Europe. What tests should be ask doctor to run to rule out parasites? Thank you.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your husband and understood your concerns. Since his reports have shown gall stones ,these are the ones that usually cause symptoms hence the first priority should be to take the gall bladder out as it may be causing the symptoms or may complicate later. Liver fluke is uncommon now a days hence rarely found in spite he has visited Japan and ask your Gastroenterologist, discuss with him to get the exact diagnosis so that you get a proper diagnosis and further management. Since the stool tests is done additional treatment can be had as per the reports. Get the liver and pancreatic functions, MRI scan of the abdomen as it may show any changes in liver secondary to the things you are thinking about. Get the preparation ready for gall bladder surgery and consult a Surgical Gastroenterologist too for further evaluation and management.
