Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m taking bupropion hcl 150 mg for depression. I m usually a very happy person but my husband of 20 years was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last year. I was torn up emotionally but stayed positive in front of him...that we were going to fight it...etc...he got on the right treatment (chemo pill) and the cancer is being treated and managed....but my insides took a beating for all the changes that happened last year. We played golf 3 days a week at a country club and we had to give that up because we didn t know if he would play golf again. I miss my ladies 18 hole golf group..... Anyway....I told my doctor about me not being able to be a happy person and could he give me something to help ( I saw a ocmmercial on television that sometimes a person needs meds to help when bad things happen that you can t control to get over the hump . i ve been taking the drug for a couple of months and like the feeling of not getting so agitated.....BUt all of a sudden the meds that I take in the morning....is giving me stomach cramps and diarrhea....I called my doctor this morning and ask for another prescription.....he suggested taking it night instead of the morning......I was just looking on the computer about the different side effects and should i keep taking it. I m 63 (will be 64) this year and never had deepression.....so this is the first time....I just take diclofenac for a back injury (fell off of a horse and hurt my back) doctors said they couldn t operate....just to keep my weight down, exercise, strech.....I m a former Physical Education teacher....never been heavy....always been active....still really active.....
If you had no side effects on Bupropion for two months, it is unlikely that your current cramps and diarrhoea were due to Bupropion. If it has helped you, you may give the night time dose a try. Other things that will help you face the stress is joining a support group for family members of cancer patients. You should also learn to balance your caregiving duties with leisure. It is important that you have enough activities in your day that you like and enjoy. Taking care of yourself will help you to take care of your husband better. Therefore, don't feel guilty when you take a break because afterwards your quality of caregiving improves. It is good that you are active. You should stay active. In case, you have persistent problems with mood you may consult a psychiatrist who will probably be able to evaluate you for depression better than a general practitioner. Hope this answers your question.
