Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My partner is pregnant she is 27 I am 31 and a cigarette smoker. I was always prepared to stop when I became a father and know I should now but it s harder than I thought any tips on how to stop this addiction once and for all so that I can be a healthy Dad?
Thanks for contacting HCM.I would appreciate you for thinking about quitting smoking. There are so many ways such as nicotine patches, chewing gum,e-cigarettes etc.But I would suggest you to gradual quitting so that you do not have any craving or withdrawl symptoms in future. Count your cigarettes smoked by you in a day.Take one cigarette out of box daily for a week e.g if you smoke 10 cigarettes in a day, smoke only nine for a week then 8 ,7,6 etc.Note-If you are not feeling comfortable at any point you can increase the duration to two weeks but dont increase the no of cigarettes.
I appreciate your effort to stop smoking.and it is always good to be a role model for the kid.
Yes smoking is very difficult to quit but not impossible. There is nicotine chewing gums which has to be used when you have high craving. There are other medications like verinicline, bupropione etc which can help you quit smoking. You can get the prescription for same by consulting a psychiatrist.
