Suggest Treatment For Baker's Cyst

Hello Doctor,

My mother is 91 and has been diagnosed with a Baker's Cyst, she's not coping with the pain at all (she has prescribed pain killers) but we're afraid she wont cope with surgery due to her age also. Not knowing whats invovled with surgery and recovery times makes it harder to make a desicion. Can you advise?

Thankyou

Thanks for contacting HCM

I am sorry to hear that your Mother was recently diagnosed with a baker's cyst. A Baker's cyst is a open sack behind the knee from chronic inflammation in the knee. The only way to treat the cyst is to actually remove it from behind the knee. Given her age she is at risk for surgery but if the surgeon opt for a less invasive anesthesia like a spinal anesthesia or a local she could have less risk.

To help reduce her current pain she is currently on pain medication and if she can tolerate them non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like Naprosyn may help.
