Suggest Treatment For HIV

I tested for the HIV virus today using the Rapid test. It came back positive. I have also recently had blood drawn and the antimitchondrial antibodies are highly elevated I ve been told. I am wondering if this would create a false positive on the test for HIV today. I did get blood drawn for the WB test today as well. Would the increase in the antimitochondrail antibodeis have any effect on that test too?

Infectious Diseases Specialist 's  Response
Hello ,
I understand your concern. I am Dr. Arun Tank, infectious disease specialist, answering your concern.

Yes there is chance of false positive reaction in rapid test for HIV. Rapid test is based on the principle of antibody testing. If the antibody production is because of some other reason it may interfere with the antibody produced, which causes false positive HIV test.

Western blot test is highly specific for HIV. It detects the whole virus particle antigen so chance of false positive is very less.

I suggest you to wait for some time to confirm your status as HIV untill the report of HIV by western blot comes.

Glad to answer your further concern.
We wish you a best health at healthcare magic.
Thank you,
Dr. Arun Tank
