I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos . I am not hypothyroid yet but have been told that my thyroid will eventually "die off" and I will become hypothyroid. I feel like I have both hypo & hyper symptoms at times. Is this normal & will I eventually be hypothyroid?
In this situation there is a 5-8% chance of developing hypothyroidism (thyroid 'die off') every year. In my practice I do a thyroid function tests every 6-12 months in this case and start on thyroid hormone replacement when TSH goes above normal.
There is no way you can prevent this from developing. Some times you may develop hypothyroidism immediately, some times after may years.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help With warm regards, Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM) Consultant Endocrinologist.
