Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi my father in law age 65 yrs was diagnosed as having parkinsonism about 7 yrs back. last month a second opinion from another neurologist elicited the diagnosis of parkinson plus and now another specialist diagnoses it as MSA. i want to know whether any of these diseases are hereditary and are my husband, his siblings (a brother and 4 sisters) and my children at risk thanks
Let me assure that Parkinson Plus is basically slightly broader term encompassing Parkinsonism and certain other symptoms. MSA stands for Multiple system atrophy and is an even broader term and may encompass Parkinson Plus. So the diagnoses are not contradictory, just a bit wider. Such diseases have a genetic component and hence there is more likelihood of your children getting the disease. But let me assure that it is not passed on in a number of cases and you you need not be apprehensive at the moment.
