Suggest Treatment For Acne Despite Taking Doxycycline

Hi, I am a 20 year old female. I have minor acne. I have been to a doctor about it and they have put me on steroid cream which seems to work but they have also put me on doxycline I was on it for 25 days and nothing changed however I thought I could see it getting worse so I stopped taking it as I ran out and just used the cream for a couple of weeks alone and my pimples and red dots were going away than I thought I’d go back on doxy and my face has broken out worse again. Do I just stop taking the doxy? I live out on a cattle station so can’t make it to town to see a doctor. Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You need to know that there is no permanent treatment for acne. With the treatment acne will go off in 2 to 3 months but after stopping treatment they can come back. Acne usually starts to appear at the age of 13 to 15 years and come and goes of many time till the age of 25 or maximum to 32 years . Till that time you have to prevent them so that you will not have acne scars and pigmentation on your face . First of all you should never ever use any steroid cream over face for acne . There are various adverse effects of steroid cream like increase hair growth , steroid can itself cause acne to appears over face , it makes skin thin so that blood vessels of face become visible, it causes a disease known as rosacea. So stop applying steroid cream.

Treatment for acne
1. For mild acne use Adapalene and benzoyl peroxid base gel at night time and a good face wash two times a day .
2. Doxycycline- it is recommended twice a day for two to three months if you have acne with some redness and pus .
3. For severe acne Isotretinoin is recommend but you need to have liver function test and fasting lipid profile test done. This drug have adverse effects on pregnancy so contraception is mandatory for a married female patient. Do not take this drug on your own.
4 For postacne scars - Dermaroller and CO2 laser will help
5. For pigmentation - Pelling and Q Switched laser will help.
