I have alopecia universalis, which is believed to be an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss in all areas of the body. There seem to be no other affects of the disease and is not known to be linked to any other autoimmune disorders. However, since it is an autoimmune disorder, I was wondering if it could problems with a tattoo healing or if my body would reject the ink if I got one.
Hi. In autoimmune diseases, immune system targets something very specific. For example, in alopecia areata (universalis if generalized), target is a molecule found in hair bulb. Rest of the immune system is OK and dont cause issues. So, tattoo healing and rejection are not expected. For alopecia universalis, various treatment modalities are available. Consult a dermatologist. The treatment needs to be monitored by regular blood tests. Thanks
