Suggest Treatment For An Injury In The Throat Caused While Brushing

My son was brushing his teeth this morning (and tongue), and the toothbrush hit the back of his throat, causing him to gag. He threw up and said it was mostly acid (he hadn't eaten anything since early last night) with a small amount (less than a teaspoonful) of blood in it. Is that ever normal?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your complain, the brush slipped in the back of the throat and as the soft palate is a sensitive area and anything touching it can cause gag reflex and vomiting can occur and as it was early morning the vomitus containing only acid is normal..
Blood in the vomit seems to be due to throat injury caused by the tooth brush causing laceration and bleeding..
If the bleeding has not occurred again in the spit then there is nothing to be worried about..
He can drink plenty of cool water and take a soft diet..
If there is some pain he can take painkiller like Ibuprofen..
Gradually the injury will heal and he will be alright..
In case if there is bleeding again you can consult an Otolaryngologist and get him evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
