Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello and welcome,
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) is a condition which shows that thyroid gland is producing too much hormones. The signs you describe (sweating, rapid heart beats etc) is the result of excess thyroid hormones acting on the cardiac and nervous system. Beta blockers - (atenolol, propranolol) are prescribed for the management of the symptoms such as anxiety, tremors, palpitations, rapid heart beats, sweating, muscle weakness and tremulousness. These medicines provide only symptomatic treatment. Beta blockers do not decrease thyroid hormones level in the body but only block their action on cardiac and nervous system. But the weight loss can only be managed with normalizing thyroid hormone level. For the definitive treatment of hyperthyroidism: pharmacologic agents (propylthiouracil, methimazole), radioactive iodine ablation and surgical treatment is used. Please, consult with your doctor for the prescription of beta blockers for the symptomatic improvement of hyperthyroidism.
I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.
Thank you, Malik Amonov MD
