Hi. My 84 year old father has left upper abdominal pain, not sharp, but worsens with a deeper breath. Has had a chronic cough with mucus since late last summer. He has no other symptoms of any kind, only this pain . It goes away upon tightening abdomenal muscle and does not hurt when he presses hi abdomen. I was concerned about mild splenic rupture due to his much coughing that doctors have no diagnosis for. the pain does not radiate, all urine and bowel movement passage is normal. He is not dizzy or nauseated.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your 84 year old Father and understood your concerns. Once of the most important cause I can think for the pain in left upper abdomen which increases with deep breathing with the past history of chronic cough with mucus without any other symptoms as you have mentioned i the inflammation of the pleura that is not easily identifies. This need the following: Get a clinical examination including auscultation of the chest for pleural rub by your Doctor. CT scan of the abdomen and chest to see for any lung, pleura and abdominal pathology to get a proper diagnosis so that a proper management can be done. Splenic rupture is usually a very acute condition and needs urgent evaluation when this happens hence least possible cause of chronic pain in left upper abdomen.
