Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I went to my doctor today and was told that a I have an anal fissure. I have been prescribed Scheriproct suppositories. I am a little nervous to use them..as I have been in very bad pain with it. She said after using them it maybe a bit sore. Is it a good medication to use for this condition. Will they help the pain?
The suppository is a topical steroid which helps reduce inflammation and hopefully pain.but it is not a direct pain reliever. A fissure is a cut and like any cut it hurts especially hen something like a bowel movement passes it. try to keep your bowel movements soft with stool softeners and sitting in a warm bath may give you some relief. If all fails and the pain continues, ask your doctor for a muscle relaxing ointment because there e is likely spasm of the anal sphincter. The ointment can be a nitrate or calcium channel blocker type of ointment . Your doctor should know about these or refer you to a gastroenterologist.
