Hi doctor , my dad is 81 yrs old has been recently diognized with anedoid systic carcinoma of the left nesal sinus tumor.we hv taken 2 opinions from renowned ent specialist who hv adviced total epilectamy as radiation does not work on this cancer . He has had a cbag done in 1996 , otherwise he's healthy n has no other medical complications. My mother is worried . We understand that this is a slow growing cancer but can b very painful if it can get into the nerves so we thought we should go ahead with surgery taking the heart risks involved . Can u advice if it would b worth taking the risk ?
You have been advised correctly. Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a tumor arising from salivary glands anywhere in the oral or nasal cavity. It is indeed a slow growing tumor but it can spread to other parts of the body when it becomes curable. If it hasnt spread, then the only curative option is surgical removal. Radiation has no role. However, I would suggest that you get the surgery done by a cancer surgeon and not an ENT specialist as complete removal is essential else the tumor will come back. CABG done 8 years back is not a problem with today's safe anesthesia.
