My mum suffers from bipolar which was really bad christmas 2008. she was taking medication but stopped during the summer as she felt better. she has now broken down again and barely gets out of bed. she is refusing to see a doctor or take any medication. is there anything i can do??
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder which is characterised by mood changes which include symptoms of mania, or mania and depression. It is an episodic illness and patient is expected to take medicines for long periods of time. She has stopped to take medicines and this is most likely the reason behind the relapse of her symptoms. She is refusing to visit a Psychiatrist this is also due to her illness. Try to motivate her to visit a Psychiatrist. Medicines like Sodium Valproate, Carbamazepine etc are commonly used in bipolar disorder.
If patient don't want to take medicines then some medicines are also available in tasteless form which can be mixed with food or liquids which patient don't come to know. Consult a Psychiatrist for details.
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which individuals have mania or mania and depression both. The symptoms are seen in episodes. She is having bipolar disorder and is refusing to visit a doctor. In such case I would advise you to consult a psychiatrist and explain the clinical situation in detail. If you are her primary care giver and psychiatrist agrees then a lot of medicines can be given to her which are available in tasteless and odourless forum. These medicines can be given to her by mixing with food and in some days she would show improvement. Once she start to show improvement then you can take her to psychiatrist. Medicines like Risperidone, Olanzapine etc are available in tasteless and odourless preparations. Other option is long action injectable antipsychotics drugs. Long acting risperidone consta injection have excellent results in controlling mood symptoms of uncooperative patients.
Thanks, hope this helps you. Consult a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.
