Dear doctor, this is a second time I am getting tarry black stool. in both cases It happens few days after eating a roasted chicken. very slight pain in the GIT. sometimes feel dizzy . First time the symptom disappeared after 4 days without medication. What could be the cause from the chicken?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted your history of tarry black stools twice and both times you had roasted chicken, slight pain in abdomen, First time it took 4 days for it to get cleared. The black tarry stools is called malena and roasted chicken may not be the cause. Black stools means there is more iron in the stool which is converted to a black pigment, the most probable cause is bleeding in the GI tract. I would advise you the following: Get the stool tested for 3 consecutive days, particularly for occult blood. Upper GI Endoscopy and Colonoscopy. CT scan of the abdomen. These will in most of the cases find the cause of bleeding and give the plan for definite treatment. Till then get the following things: Soft bland diet, avoid oily and spicy foods. Tale a PPI like Omeprazole, antacid and see the results. Further treatment will be as per the reports of investigations.
