Suggest Treatment For Bleeding, Dark Colored Stool, A Fissure And Internal Hemorrhoids

My 88yo dad was having some bleeding with dark colored stools 2 days ago. He went to see his primary care provider who did a rectal exam and said he had a fissure with some internal hemorrhoids. This weekend, the bleeding has subsided but his stools are black, shredded cheese consistency,he doesn t have much of an appetite but no pain or discomfort. What would this be an indication of? I plan to call tom. morning to see about getting him in with a GI doc.

Hi,

If stool is still dark, you should seek medical advice from a GI specialist as soon as possible. He may need a colonoscopy and blood transfusion if he is anemic.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Amr Mohamed, Internal Medicine Specialist
