Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am having a pain in my chest area and I don t have anyone to talk with about my symptoms. I don t know if I should go to the ER or not. Throughout my life I ve had issues with gas being so bad it causes a sharp pain in my chest, but this feels different. I awoke yesterday morning with a sharp pain in my chest (but not my lungs). I rubbed my belly and lower abdomen and later took some alka seltzer; it seemed to help. Then I slept all afternoon long (from maybe 12ish to 4:30 or so), but went to bed last night at a somewhat normal time, but took a melatonin, and another alka seltzer. I slept for a couple of hours but woke with pain in my chest.
Noted the history and understood the concerns. Pain in chest at odd times should be investigated immediately. Rush to ER to have one EKG, cardiac check up as this is one of the most dreaded thing to miss. If the Cardiological investigations are normal then you can be started with proper clinical evaluation and examination; relevant investigations help further hence in your case may be an upper GI Endoscopy, ultrasonography and other investigation as required. Once a proper cause is found which may be like GERD, costochondritis and so on. X-ray of the chest is also important. Get proper investigations and clinical evaluation and proper medications.
