Unfortunately the virus that causes chicken pox can cross the placenta and affect the baby, especially when you are close to delivery. I suggest you inform our OB provider immediately and, depending on where you live and your access to a hospital, you need a plan for delivery for your infant to possibly get immunoglobulin or other medication to help reduce the risk to your baby.
I do not want you to panic- but congenital varicella (the virus that causes chicken pox) can cause bad skin and even brain problems in the baby.
I hope you are far enough for your due date that this is not an issue- but you should consult promptly with an OB doctor and you may need ultrasounds or blood testing to make sure your baby is OK.
I am sorry to deliver this news but I want to make sure you seel appropriate medical care. There is a chance everything will be fine but you need to have your baby evaluated soon.
Sincerely, Dr. Brown
