Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my husband recently donated blood and we got a paper in the mail saying that his cholesterol level is a 148. And then he may consider consulting a doctor. My husband is 6'1" roughly 185 lbs, and is 28 years of age. although he does not go to the gym he is very active. He does drink on weekends mostly just beer and can eat whatever he wants.i was wanting to know should we really go to the doctor cholesterol level.
First you should check what that figure refers to. If 149 mg/dl is the total cholesterol then it is perfectly normal (up to 200 is normal for most laboratories) and you don't need to do anything. If that is the case you can stop reading my answer right now. If on the other hand there are several figures on that paper, for different kinds of cholesterol carrying products and that figure is about LDL cholesterol then it is a little high. It's not very high, no reason to panic (although reference ranges can differ between laboratories), to lower it dietary changes are needed and if that is not enough and it remains high in follow up control tests then lipid lowering drugs like statins can be used. So check whether if 149 is Total cholesterol or LD cholesterol. If the first it's fine, if the second then you can schedule an appointment with your primary care physician. I hope to have been of help.
